Do you have acne scars? Do they interrupt your daily life, make it more challenging to apply makeup, or just make you feel self-conscious? Even if you have overcome acne, the scars may remain and make you feel like your acne hasn’t entirely gone away.

However, there’s good news! At La Belle Vie Medical Care and Aesthetics, we have several effective treatment options to reduce the appearance of acne scars. So if you have ever thought about having a cosmetic treatment to wipe away your acne scars, keep reading!

What Are the Three Types of Acne Scarring?

There are three main types of acne scarring: minimal, moderate to severe, and severe. These three types will determine the most effective kind of treatment for you. To find what type of scarring you have, check out the three distinctions below.

Minimal

Minimal acne scarring is exactly what it sounds like: you probably had minimal acne, and now your scarring is either relatively sparse, or the scars are pretty light. Minimal acne scarring doesn’t need much treatment to be corrected, and minimal acne scars are usually treated through chemical peels, microneedling, or laser skin resurfacing treatments like CO2.

Moderate to Severe

Moderate to severe acne scarring is where there is the most extensive range in the appearance of your scars. But there are also many ways to treat it. More severe acne scarring is usually treated with a combination of procedures, including PDO threads, laser CO2, and/or Profound. Profound treatments are similar to traditional microneedling, but the needles go deeper and use dermal heating technology. Moderate to severe acne scars usually require a consultation to determine the best treatment(s) for you.

Severe

Severe acne scars are usually characterized by “pockmarks,” which are small indentations or concave scars on the face that can give your skin the appearance of having indentations or holes. Pockmarks can be very frustrating as they cannot be covered simply by using high-coverage makeup or color correction. For severe acne scars, your doctor will likely use one of the treatments mentioned above in combination with a dermal filler to help “fill in” some of the deepest crevices.

What Are the Six Ways To Treat Acne Scarring at La Belle Vie?

There are six main treatment methods for acne scarring at La Belle Vie. The right one for you will depend on your preferred treatment method and the severity of your acne scars. Your doctor may use only one or a combination of several approaches to treat your acne scars. A consultation in our office will help you, and your clinician better understands your unique situation. This way, you can discuss your skincare goals and the best way to meet them.

Laser CO2 and Profound

Laser CO2 and Profound Skin Tightening are two highly-effective treatments. These two treatments are typically used for more severe acne scarring, as they employ an aggressive approach to acne scar treatment.

Essentially, this means using both a resurfacing laser and a skin-tightening treatment. Thermal microchannels in the CO2 laser penetrate the skin without damaging surrounding tissue, while Profound Skin Tightening jumpstarts collagen production to improve the texture of your skin.

PDO Threads

PDO Threads are actual, tiny threads that are placed underneath the surface of the skin of the face and neck. The threads essentially damage underlying tissue, which at first might sound counterproductive. However, your body responds by immediately starting to repair itself, and that’s where the healing happens! The process stimulates the production of new collagen.

Thread lifts make your skin softer, firmer, less wrinkled, and less scarred. They also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and imperfections. Additionally, PDO threads have a rapid recovery time compared to other treatments.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a commonly-used procedure for scarring and other cosmetic concerns. A microneedling pen has dozens of tiny needles that graze over the skin to improve skin’s texture, reduce pore size or appearance, and reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Microneedling is minimally invasive, and like thread lifts, the process results in a controlled skin injury. However, the damage immediately jumpstarts the production of new collagen and elastin. Multiple treatments may be necessary if your acne scarring is severe.

Profound

Profound Skin Tightening is designed to tighten the deeper, lower levels of the skin. This treatment, which is used for moderate to severe acne scars, uses dermal heating to trigger new collagen production deep under the skin’s surface.

Only three to five days of downtime are needed for Profound treatments. During this time, your skin will experience increased collagen production, elastin production, hyaluronic acid production, and a diminishing of acne scarring.

Fillers

Dermal Fillers of any type will essentially resurface the appearance of the top layers of the skin. Fillers are great for those trying to treat severe acne scars, which usually result in depressed crevices or “holes” in your skin.

Filler will naturally plump those areas and help them to appear more healed. Dermal fillers will help enhance your features without leaving you with that “frozen” look, and several different fillers may be used.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels use a mix of various skin-safe chemicals to help remove the top layer of skin to reveal new, smooth skin underneath. Using the right chemical peel can significantly reduce or even eliminate some of your acne scars.

This treatment can also reduce any current acne you might have.

Medical Treatments

Medical treatment specifically for acne is also available at our office, and we currently offer exams and evaluations to help determine the right treatment for your skin.

During a medical appointment, you will typically have an exam, injection, and extraction (if necessary). We may even prescribe Accutane in severe cases.
