Let’s talk a little more about how this innovative, non-surgical technology works.
What Is CoolSculpting?
Approved by the FDA in 2010, CoolSculpting has often been compared to liposuction without the invasive surgery. It uses cryolipolysis, a technology that was actually discovered when researchers noticed that children who ate a lot of popsicles had less fat in their cheeks. Basically, the cold from the freeze pops was killing the fat cells in the kid’s cheeks but leaving the skin cells intact.
Despite the oddity of its beginnings, scientists ran with the theory and developed the technology now known as CoolSculpting.
The technology targets areas of fat on the body and “spot treats” it by freezing the fat cells, which essentially destroys them without destroying your skin and other vital tissue. With little to no downtime, it’s one of the most effective treatments on the market if you are looking to rid yourself of stubborn areas of fat.
How Does CoolSculpting Work?
With CoolSculpting, a practitioner will use a handheld applicator in one of four different sizes to conduct the procedure. These devices are moved over the skin of the targeted area, and the technician applies cold and suction. Freezing the fat cells causes them to crystalize and die.
What Happens to the Dead Fat Cells?
Many people wonder what actually happens to the dead fat cells. Not to worry, over a period of weeks to months, your body naturally eliminates them as waste. You won’t notice this happening as it is very gradual. The process won’t affect your digestion or everyday life.
How Long Will It Take?
Typically, a CoolSculpting procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes for each problem area, not including your initial consultation and prep time. If you have more than one area of concern, We can do two areas of your body at the same time.
Can CoolSculpting Help Me Lose Weight?
CoolSculpting is highly effective in removing stubborn fat, so many people wonder if they could just CoolSculpt their entire body to lose weight. However, while you may lose a few pounds in the weeks following your procedure, the technology is not designed for overall weight loss. For that, you will need to resort to traditional methods like diet and exercise.
However, suppose you’ve already made these significant lifestyle changes but are still dealing with some fatty regions of your body that just won’t budge. In that case, CoolSculpting is the ideal procedure to have. It can be a great motivator and self-esteem booster for those who have tried everything to rid themselves of embarrassing areas of fat.
Who Is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting?
To find out if CoolSculpting can help you, the best thing to do is schedule a free consultation with our office. This way, we can discuss your goals and determine if the procedure can help you get to where you want to be. We find that CoolSculpting works best for those who meet the following criteria:
- You are already at a healthy weight
- You have tried to “spot treat’ unsightly fat deposits with other methods to no avail
- You are in reasonably good health
- You are not pregnant or trying to conceive
- You understand the treatment fully
- You don’t want to avoid the invasive nature of liposuction
- You have “pinchable bulges” of fat like small saddlebags, muffin tops, a slight paunch, or a stubborn spare tire.
What Areas of the Body Can Be CoolSculpted?
CoolSculpting is FDA-approved to treat visible bulges of fat in the following areas of the body:
- Thigh
- Abdomen
- Flank
- Back
- Under the buttocks (banana roll)
- Upper arms
- Under the chin
- Under the jawline
- Breasts (bra fat)
How Many CoolSculpting Sessions Will I Need?
A single treatment is designed to reduce fat in the treated area by 20 to 25 percent, so the results will be subtle, depending on the area being treated. Most people need more than one treatment to achieve the results they are looking for. Everyone is different. Before proceeding with your treatment, we will sit down and discuss your goals so you know if you will likely need more sessions.
What Results Can I Realistically Expect From CoolSculpting Treatments?
You will not see results the day of your treatment. Instead, results will come within a few weeks to months. Sometimes, it can take up to six months for the treatment to work fully. It’s essential that you go into CoolSculpting with this time frame in mind. Think of it as though you are slowly and gradually reshaping your body into how you prefer it to look.
The results you will get from CoolSculpting depend on what you are looking to achieve. Some people experience stunning effects over time, while others are looking for a more subtle change, such as reducing a double chin or reducing extra layers of fat around the bra line. CoolSculpting does not have the dramatic effects of liposuction. Instead, it is a way for those who are reasonably happy with how they look to perfect troublesome areas to feel even more confident.
To get a better idea of the types of changes you can expect, you can check out some before and after photos on our web page, and you can also visit CoolSculpting.com.
Does CoolSculpting Hurt?
You will likely feel intense cold for the first few minutes of the procedure itself as the temperature numbs the area. We also use a special vacuum that draws the fatty tissue in. This device can cause mild pinching, pulling, or tugging. Most people don’t find the procedure painful, but at times it can be uncomfortable. Some patients experience virtually no discomfort at all.
Are There Any Side Effects of CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is FDA-approved and safe. However, there can be some side effects. The most common are numbness, itching, bruising, redness, tenderness, soreness, or tingling at the site where the technician performed the work. These effects are usually mild and can be remedied with over-the-counter pain relievers. Other side effects can occur, so it’s important to do some reading and speak with your doctor before you decide to go with CoolSculpting.
